World Hypertension Day-2016; Scenario in Pakistan


16 years ago I lost my father due to stroke. He had hypertension, was taking medicines but one day he had stroke and died. There are so many similar cases. Modern epidemic of hypertension is killing millions of people silently.


Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are leading cause of death in the world. They are also called silent killers. World Hypertension Day (WHD) was first celebrated in 2005 and since than it became an annual event. WHD is celebrated each year to promote public awareness of hypertension, so people could prevent and control this disease. It is also called modern epidemic, which is mainly prevalent in developed countries but now developing countries are also at great risk.

The theme for WHD 2016 is “Know your numbers” with a goal of increasing high blood pressure awareness in all the population around the world. More than 7 million people die due to hypertension annually.
